Philosophy
At Harrington Design studio we work with wood. We carve, bend and shape it to make items of utility. Hopefully they are beautiful enough to honor the material from which they are made. Over time, we have come to understand more of wood’s internal make up and not just the surface glamor of its grain and figure. When we cut wood with a chisel or saw, we slice through the annual growth rings that make up its cellular structure, reminding us of the wood’s experience with time and season. These annual growth rings are the visual symbol of the wood’s experience with wind, rain, sun, and storm. These events in a tree’s life are what give each slice of wood its unique color and texture. We make every effort to bring forth these events in our work, realizing that only through time and experience can we liberate nature and ourselves.
